Number River: jump onto the right number
Each kid has a sign with a question, like 5 + 3 or what comes after 6, 7, and three numbered lily pads float in the river in front of them, small to big. They stand under the right number and jump onto its pad, and a frog hops along the stepping stones to count it out.
Why the camera? It’s how the runners copy each move, and the video never leaves this device.
Part of the Family Unlock. If this device has it, the button opens the game. If not, it takes you to the unlock.
How it plays
- Read your sign: a sum, or a row of numbers with one missing.
- Step under the right number. A beam in your colour joins you to the pad you'd jump to.
- Jump onto its lily pad. The right pad glows gold, the sign shows the answer, and the frog hops along the stones to count it out: from 5 to 8 for 5 + 3.
A wrong pad sinks with a splash. You're back on the bank with the same question, and that pad is gone. After two misses, or a little while, the frog sits on the right pad to help.
Levels
Ten levels in two worlds. The first counts up to 10: what comes next, then before and between, then adding, taking away, and both. The second goes up to 20: the teens, adding without crossing 10 and then across it, adding and taking away, and the missing number, like 7 + ? = 10. Each family's progress is remembered on that device.
It's a team game: two kids side by side each get their own questions, at their own pace, and their points add up to pass the level. Player 1, on the left, plays two levels ahead, so an older and a younger kid can play together. One kid can play alone too.
Number River and Sum Run
They're different games. In Sum Run, a sum comes up and the kids run into the lane with the answer. In Number River the river stands still and there's no clock on each question: the kids jump to answer, and a wrong pad sinks so they can try again.
The Family Unlock
Number River comes with the Family Unlock, along with Sneak, Ten Jar and Word Hop: one payment, no subscription, on up to 5 of your family's devices, with a 30-day refund. Hopadoo, Sum Run, Word Pop and Monkey Mirror stay free either way. See pricing.
Setting up takes two minutes
- A laptop, tablet or phone with a camera. Prop a tablet or phone up sideways, on a shelf or against a few books.
- Put it at about chest height, camera facing the room: a laptop on a table or TV stand, or a tablet or phone propped up sideways. A laptop plugged into the TV makes the runners easy to see.
- Step back 2 to 3 metres: Player 1 on the left, Player 2 on the right, head to toe in view.
- Hands up to join, and play.
Nothing leaves your device
There are no accounts or logins, no ads and no tracking. The camera video is processed on the device and never uploaded, so no video, photos or body data leave it.
Questions
What numbers does it use?
Up to 10 in the first five levels, then up to 20. The sums add or take away a few at a time, and the last level asks for the missing number.
How much jumping is there?
One jump for each answer, onto the lily pad. For a game with no jumping at all, try Monkey Mirror.
What ages is it for?
About 5 to 12.
What if the camera isn’t working?
Every game also plays with the keyboard, so nobody misses out.
