Word Hop: listen, then hop
Sunny says a word out loud. Three words stand on the arches ahead, and each kid steps into the lane with the word they heard, then runs through. It starts with short, simple words like cat and sun, and grows with each kid.
Why the camera? It’s how the runners copy each move, and the video never leaves this device.
Part of the Family Unlock. If this device has it, the button opens the game. If not, it takes you to the unlock.
How it plays
- Listen: Sunny says a word, like "sun".
- Read the arches: three words, and one of them is the word she said.
- Step into its lane and run through the arch.
Levels
Ten levels. The first words are short and very different from each other, like cat, dog and sun. Then the words on the arches look more and more alike, and later ones get longer. Each kid climbs at their own pace, and each player's level is remembered on that device.
Two kids can play side by side. They both hear the same word, at the easier of their two levels, and race to the same answer.
Word Hop and Word Pop
They're different games. In Word Pop, a picture word is missing a letter, and kids jump to pop the right letter in. In Word Hop, kids listen to Sunny and step into the lane with the word she says.
The Family Unlock
Word Hop comes with the Family Unlock, along with Sneak, Ten Jar and Number River: one payment, no subscription, on up to 5 of your family's devices, with a 30-day refund. Hopadoo, Sum Run, Word Pop and Monkey Mirror stay free either way. See pricing.
Setting up takes two minutes
- A laptop, tablet or phone with a camera. Prop a tablet or phone up sideways, on a shelf or against a few books.
- Put it at about chest height, camera facing the room: a laptop on a table or TV stand, or a tablet or phone propped up sideways. A laptop plugged into the TV makes the runners easy to see.
- Step back 2 to 3 metres: Player 1 on the left, Player 2 on the right, head to toe in view.
- Hands up to join, and play.
Nothing leaves your device
There are no accounts or logins, no ads and no tracking. The camera video is processed on the device and never uploaded, so no video, photos or body data leave it.
Questions
What words does it use?
Short, everyday words to start, like cat, sun and dog, then longer ones as each kid goes. Each player's level is remembered on that device.
Do the kids need to read?
They need to recognise the word Sunny says among three written words. The first level keeps the three words very different, so it starts gently.
What ages is it for?
About 5 to 12.
What if the camera isn’t working?
Every game also plays with the keyboard, so nobody misses out.
